TAB takes protecting information seriously, especially since security breaches seem to become more and more common. TAB’s information security team uses a variety of controls and programs to implement protections, including FDIC assessments, Payment Card Industry controls, the Center for Internet Security and NIST. While no program or tool can provide complete security, we have ongoing processes to evaluate our risks and controls to make sure that we are taking appropriate measures to protect our customers.
Customers of any bank are prime targets for any criminal – they are always after money. Usually the top risks for customers are password attacks, phishing and ransomware. The best ways to protect yourself from each of these is outlined below:
Passwords
The best way to protect yourself from getting your password compromised is to use multifactor authentication such as google authenticator or a hardware token wherever possible. Once multifactor authentication is set up, the next step is to use long and unique passwords for your logins – everyone has too many passwords to remember, so the best way to accomplish this is to use a reputable password manager that can automatically create and store good passwords for you.
Phishing
Be suspicious of links in unsolicited emails! If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you get an email that looks like it is from TAB or any other trusted institution, pause for a few seconds to look it over and see if there is anything that looks a little strange about it. If so, it is better to open a new browser and navigate to the site there rather than clicking on any links in the email.
Ransomware
The way to protect yourself against ransomware is to beware of phishing emails and have backups of your important data. Criminals will try to encrypt and ransom your data back to you, but if you have a recent backup you can just laugh and ignore their demands. An automatic backup solution is the best option here
